In these lists I hope to give you an idea where and how regular we saw the species. However it is often difficult to give exact and useful information. Altogether we identified about 330 bird species and 44 mammal species on the trip. Of more than 170 species we took photos. To view the photos in bigger size just click on the small icons in the bird list.

Birds we met in South Africa:

The names in the bird lists are from SASOL Birds of Southern Africa. This was the fieldguide we used and we also used the "old fashioned" ordering system in this book. The numbers given with the name in the bird species are used in most of the fieldguides and also on checklists or bird sound tapes. These numbers are from Roberts' Bird of Southern Africa.
There have been some splits recently, especially with larks but also with other birds. Since we didn't have the literature to follow every recent split some of the birds might be named a little bit "incorrect". Some species, again especially larks but also pipits etc., are very hard to be told apart for birdwatchers having no experiencence with South African Birds, nevertheless we have tried to do our best!
